Chris Paul and David West put up some gaudy numbers for the New Orleans Hornets. Somehow, the Houston Rockets came away with the win anyway.

Aaron Brooks scored 27 points, Luis Scola added 13 points and 12 rebounds and the Rockets overcame Paul’s triple-double and West’s career game for a 108-100 win over the Hornets.

Paul had 16 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for his 11th career triple-double and first this season. West had 44 points and 12 rebounds, but the Hornets still slipped to 2-13 on the road this season.

“We’re trying to pick up wins, especially out on the road,” said West, who hit 18 of 30 shots. “We got the rhythm that we wanted, but we just weren’t able to sustain it.”

The team says an MRI confirmed the initial diagnosis. Paul twisted his left ankle in the Hornets' loss Friday night to Portland. Team spokesman Dennis Rogers said Monday that Paul will be evaluated daily but remains out indefinitely.

The over-under on the recovery is 17 days.

Paul narrowly missed his seventh triple-double this season with 31 points, 17 assists and nine rebounds, and the New Orleans Hornets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 102-92 on Sunday to earn a split in a key late-season home-and-home series.

Afterward, Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said his club could do little to slow Paul.

“We tried everything. We were trapping him … pretty much the whole fourth quarter,” Carlisle said. “He just found ways to either draw fouls or get the ball to other people. That’s what great players do. He was great down the stretch.”

Paul had 20 of his points in the second half. For the game, he shot 11-of-15 from the field—making both 3-pointers he tried—and 7-of-7 from the foul line.

“Paul was setting everybody up and he was scoring, so that’s why he’s one of the best point guards in the league,” said Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki, who had 29 points and 14 rebounds.

David West scored 31 points to help New Orleans (49-31) move a game ahead of Dallas for the sixth playoff seed in the Western Conference. Each team has two games left in the regular season.

“Obviously, you want to be seeded as high as possible, but it’s all about us playing well,” Paul said. “Whatever seed we get, I think we’ll be fine.”

Chris Paul had a season-high 20 assists, and West scored 28 points to lead the Hornets, who won their third straight.

“I won’t even talk about the first 30 minutes because right now the taste in my mouth is the last seven or eight,” Hornets coach Byron Scott said. “My first words were my initials, and that’s not good. We were looking at the scoreboard and hoping it would just run out.”

“The thing that has been bothering us the last two or three weeks is our rebounding,” Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said. “The last play of the game, we just looked at it, they kind of shoved us right under the basket and were able to tip the ball in.”

The Hornets were in control through three quarters. Paul, who finished one shy of his career best of 21 assists, tied his season high of 17 with a behind-the-back pass to Sean Marks for a dunk with 2:23 left in the third quarter. Chris Paul stole the ball and rocketed the other way, spinning a one-handed floater off the glass as he was fouled, then slapping the padding under the basket with both hands in celebration.

This is on the heels of fresh allegations of prison abuse at Guantanamo reported in statements taken from 13 detainees shortly after a navy chaplain reported the incidents to military investigators in mid-October. The detainees said they were repeatedly beaten and humiliated sexually by American interrogators working at the site.

Pentagon spokesman Navy Cmdr. Jeffrey Gordon denied the report and any new allegations. "The Department of Defense policy is clear," he said. "We treat all detainees humanely." There was no comment on whether or not Guantanamo officials sodomized Claus with a candy cane.

This is not good news for an already struggling economy. Any holes left in gift delivery will have to be filled by an increase in demand in consumer goods, an increase that will take away from an already monumental task of retooling the nation's lagging infrastructure. CNN - Governor Schwarzenegger made a break from the Republican platform to warn that robo-calls are the first wave of seemingly unstoppable cyborg assassins sent back from the year 2029 by a race of artificially intelligent machines bent on the extermination of the human race. These cyborgs are known as Terminators and were invented by Skynet, a form of artificial intelligence created by Cyberdyne Systems. In the near future Skynet will gain self-awareness, take over all military hardware, and initiates a nuclear war against humanity.

"First they get the phones," the governor explained, "and then they get the refrigerators and internets, then the planes with the bombing and the shooting."

Snopes and factcheck.org have already largely debunked the story as another Republican scare tactic, mainly objecting to the flaws in the explanation of Terminator time travel and taking particular issue with the predestination paradox. But at least it was entertaining to hear Schwarzenegger pronounce "refrigerator."
